A Note from the Associate Pastor Minimize

And a great good morning to you!

Service and Mission denotes the lifeblood of any church. We have often proclaimed – and by God’s grace, this congregation has often modeled – that the church exists in order to give itself away.
Today our worship services showcase two very different dimensions of this reality. At 8:30 am, we commission the men and women who will venture to New Orleans for our third partnering effort with Rebuilding Hope In New Orleans (RHINO) – a dynamic home-reconstruction outreach through our sister congregation, St. Charles Avenue Presbyterian.
I was privileged to sweat and serve with the first team in July 2006 (December should be a much more pleasant time to perform manual labor in the Big Easy!) – and we were blown away by the breadth and beauty of this ministry. Participants with our September 2007 trip report that more than two years after Hurricane Katrina devastated the Gulf Coast, too many of our fellow citizens still exist in stark conditions. We send another team by plane this afternoon to assure these neighbors that they are not alone and that we have not forgotten.
At 11:00 am, we witness the fruit of a semester’s labor as our KidsKhoir presents the musical, “Following the Christmas Star.” Susan McDowell and her exceptional team have coached and loved these children amid their hard work … As leaders, they have given themselves away so that young people will hide the word of God in their hearts – seizing and singing the reality that heaven came to earth in Jesus Christ. It’s fun, of course, and the kids are cute … and the truth is inescapable! These kids are learning to follow the One who gave himself away for our sake.
On a final note, be sure to stop by the table outside after worship to pick up a “No More Fruitcake” catalog … This Service & Mission catalog is one of my favorite things we do at CommPres.
Friends, we have weekly and daily opportunities to give ourselves away for Jesus’ sake … Let’s live like we get it!

You are loved,

Nancy Graham Ogne

He was despised and rejected by men,
a man of sorrows, and familiar with suffering.
Like one from whom men hide their faces
he was despised, and we esteemed him not.
Surely he took up our infirmities
       and carried our sorrows,
yet we considered him stricken by God,
       smitten by him, and afflicted.
But he was pierced for our transgressions,
       he was crushed for our iniquities;
the punishment that brought us peace was upon him,
and by his wounds we are healed.
